The Canadian U18 women’s basketball team equaled an all-time best by winning the silver medal at the FIBA Americas championships.

Playing in Valdivia, Chile, Canada lost 109-62 to the United States in the gold-medal game on Sunday. The loss was Canada’s lone defeat in five games.

The Canadian roster featured Langley’s Aislinn Konig.

Konig started all five games, averaging 11.6 points, five rebounds, 3.4 assists and one steal per contest.

“We were beaten by a strong USA team that shot the lights out tonight,” said Canada’s head coach, Carly Clarke. “We executed our game plan early but they wore us down towards the end of the first half and we were unable to rebound from it.

“We are extremely proud of what this team has accomplished and to bring home the silver medal.”

Canada trailed 23-20 after one quarter before the United States pulled away.

With the team’s top four finish, Canada qualified for the FIBA U19 women’s world championships next summer.
