Kootenay Ice lose two games to Fraser Valley Thunderbirds

The Nelson based BC Hockey major midget league team played host to the lower-mainland team this weekend.

The BC Hockey major midget Kootenay Ice played host to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds this weekend losing both games.

The Thunderbirds won 5-2 on Saturday night. The Thunderbirds were the first to get on the board with a goal by Jonathan Stein. Ice Shawn Campbell brought the score to 1-1 with an assist by Hunter Floris.

In the second, the Thunderbirds added three goals by Jake Mulder, Justin Hargrave and Jamie Hausch. Ice Terrell Clarricoates managed to score a second goal assisted by Brendan Makay for a 4-2 score at the end of the second. Thunderbird Jonathan Rees scored the fifth goal in the third, bringing the score to 5-2.

The Thunderbirds gained their second win on Sunday morning. With zero scoring in the first, Thunderbirds Jake Mulder and Mackenzie Wight each scored in the second. In the third, Thunderbird Matthew Dyck scored a third before Ice Hunter Floris scored, assisted by Aiden Jenner, ending the game at 3-1.

Kootenay Ice coach Brian Jones said the weekend games were a good team effort and were in both games right until the end.

“I thought Curt Doyle was solid in net, Brendan Makay had a strong weekend on defense and Hunter Floris was a force as always up front,” Jones told the Star.

“Our achilles heel has always been goal scoring and that was evident again this weekend. However, we are generating chances offensively so eventually I think the puck will start to go in for us. Defensively we have cut down our goals against of late so kudos to the kids for executing what we practice.”

The Kootenay Ice play the Vancouver NE Chiefs in Nelson on Nov. 29 at 9:45 a.m.
