Kripps wins gold in bobsleigh

Justin Kripps of Summerland and his bobsleigh team slid to gold on the weekend at the Canadian Bobsleigh Championships in Calgary.

On Sunday, Kripps, with his team of Ben Coakwell, Josh Kirkpatrick and Jesse Lumsden, finished the four-man race with a time of 1:48.93.

On Saturday, Kripps and Lumsden claimed the two-man title with a time of 1:53.04.

“Things are going really well for this time of year,” he said. “We always want to go faster, but things are getting better each day and I’m happy with where I’m at.”

Bobsleigh athletes will next compete on Nov. 11 for a North America’s Cup race at Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park.

Kripps, 29, grew up in Summerland and has competed in bobsleigh since 2006.

He competed in the Olympics in 2010 as a member of Pierre Lueders’ team. In 2014, he piloted a team at the Sochi Winter Olympics, where he finished sixth in the two-man competition.

Team Kripps is ranked sixth worldwide in the four-man category and seventh in the two-man category.
