The Pen High Lakers junior and Grade 9 girls basketball teams went 4-0, while the Maggie Mustangs won two of four games in their co-hosted tournament.
The junior Lakers wrapped the tournament with a 37-30 win over the Okanagan Mission Huskies. Kali Loewen led the Laker attack with 12 points with eight rebounds. Emma Terris and Kinsey Corday were named players of the game.
“It was almost a month since our last competitive games —early December at the KSS tournament,” said Lakers coach Chris Terris, whose team is 13-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. “This was the type of tough, physical game that forces you to grow as a team.”

The Lakers opened with a 47-41 win over the Kelowna Christian Knights. Loewen scored nearly half her teams points with 20 to go with 10 rebounds. Kalli Doell led her team with eight steals.
In their second game the Lakers doubled up Argyle Pipers 50-26. Kayley Davies led with 14 points, while Loewen added 11. Loewen and Jennifer Hayman led with eight boards each and four steals.
In their third match, the Lakers easily defeated Carson Graham Gibys, 51-14. Doell rang up 24 points to go with four rebounds and steals. Devito, Emma Terris and Mckenna Clarke each chipped in six points.
In a league match on Jan. 5, the Lakers crushed Similkameen Spark 74-7. Clarke led with 17 points, while Loewen added 12 with nine boards.
The Laker 9s finished the tournament with a 49-23 win over the Mustangs. Sophie Brydon led the Lakers with 12 points and Maria Iannone led with six assists.
The Lakers opened with a 41-23 win over Argyle. Iannone and Jaden Yamamoto each had nine points. Emma Barron had 10 rebounds. Against Vernon, the Lakers won 45-39. Barron led with 11 points. Against Pleasant Valley, the Lakers won 63-10. Brydon rang up 24 points.
Lakers coach Lesley Lacroix said her team had a great weekend.
“Against Maggie my players finally achieved the fast pace of play we’ve been demanding of them this season,” she said. “Our offence centered around a fast-break utilizing few dribbles from my all-star point guard Maria Iannone, as she head-manned the ball down the floor well, resulting in good transition opportunities.”
The Mustangs picked up wins against Pleasant Valley, 52-17 and Mt. Boucherie, 36-33. Their other loss was to Vernon, 36-35.

“I thought we played really well yesterday (Friday, Jan. 6). We played a really good game against VSS,” said Mustangs coach Dave Killick. “It was then time to give everyone a chance to play and see where we’re at. I think it kind of showed lots of areas that we need to work on coming up. Overall I’m pleased.”
