Langley United falls in Cup final

The Langley United U14 Silver team came up one goal short in their quest for a Coastal Cup championship.

The boys soccer squad was on the short end of a 3-2 score against Surrey FC Barca on Saturday in Richmond in the Coastal B Cup championship game.

Langley opened the scoring when Riley Peters headed home a cross from Zach Pilch 10 minutes into the game, but Barca responded with a pair of breakaway goals to take a 2-1 lead at the half. After the lead was extended to 3-1, Pilch converted a Trevor Miller cross to pull Langley within a goal, but they could not notch the equalizer.

“We had the goalie scrambling, but we just couldn’t get the tying goal,” lamented coach Rich Smallwood.

In the game’s final 15 minutes, he said his team hit a crossbar, a post and several defenders with their scoring attempts.

Langley has still qualified for the provincial soccer championships this July in Aldergrove.
