Langley’s Jang qualifies for junior provincial golf championships

Short game saves Langley's Andy Jang after he had some trouble off the tee

Langley’s Andy Jang edged Vernon’s Braeden Cooper by one shot to take top spot in the juvenile boys’ division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Ford Series event over the weekend.

Jang shot a 38 on Saturday — the torrential downpour shortened the opening round to nine holes — and then 75 in Sunday’s full round for a 113.

The event was held at Pitt Meadows’ Swan-e-set Bay Resort.

“My short game saved my errant tee shots,” said the 15-year-old Jang. “Cooper was coming in hot, but my putting stopped him.

“I feel great because this is my first win of the season.”

The win also gives Jang a direct exemption into the B.C. junior boys provincial championship this summer as well as a shortlisted spot on MJT Team Canada to compete in the Srixon International Junior Classic in Australia. The finalists will be announced once qualifying is completed across Canada.

Langley’s Rebecca Jiang was fourth in the girls’ 15-19 division.
