Langley’s Konig looks to land spot on Canada’s U18 squad

Former Brookswood Bobcat standout aiming to wear Maple Leaf next month in Chile

Aislinn Konig is among the 17 invitees competing for a roster spot with Canada Basketball’s U18 women’s national team.

The 18-year-old from Langley will attend the tryouts and training camp at York University in Toronto.

The camp runs June 27 to July 8.

“We’re looking forward to working with this group,” said Carly Clarke, Canada’s head coach.

“It will be a competitive camp as we look to put together the best team to compete at the FIBA Americas in Chile and qualify for the 2017 U19 world championships.”

Konig is a five-foot-nine point guard who graduated from Brookswood Secondary.

She helped the Bobcats senior girls win three consecutive B.C. 3A provincial basketball championships, becoming the first player in the history of the tournament to win the most valuable player award three times. She was also named Basketball BC female high school player of the year in May.

Konig finished her Grade 12 year early and left last month for North Carolina State University on a basketball scholarship.

The final 12-player roster will be decided at the end of the training camp and the team will then travel to Valdivia, Chile for the 2016 U18 FIBA Americas championships, which run July 13 to 17.

Canada is in a pool with Mexico, Chile and Puerto Rico.
