Langley’s Courney Shmyr has been named to Speed Skating Canada’s short track women’s development team.

Shmyr, who now lives and trains in Calgary, is one of four women named to the team.

The 21-year-oldĀ  began in the sport with the Langley Blades Speed Skating Club.

And Jessica Hewitt, who was born in Langley but grew up in Kamloops, was one of seven women named to the national team.

The 27-year-old represented Canada at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, helping win silver in the 3,000m short track team event.

The athletes named to the teams are now eligible to compete in the Fall World Cup Selection competition this September, which qualifies Canada’s athletes at the frist four World Cups of the season.

The athletes may later qualify for the fifth and sixth World Cups, the world championships and the Winter Universiade through their participation at the Canadian short track championships, held in mid-January.
