It was icing on the cake following a great hockey season for Trail’s Jake Lucchini.
The Smoke Eater captain was named to the BCHL’s Second All Star Team on Thursday.
It’s just another feather in the cap of the 19-year-old Trail native.
Lucchini was named one of the finalists for the BCHL Most Valuable Player.
He also earned a hockey scholarship to Michigan Tech University just before Christmas.
He led the Smokies in scoring 35 goals and 83 points.
Lucchini, who played his entire minor hockey in the Greater Trail system and three seasons with the Smokies.
Eleven different BCHL teams are represented on the league’s first and second teams as well as the All-Rookie Team.
The first team features forwards Corey Mackin and rookie Brett Supinski from Coquitlam and Victoria’s Dane Gibson. Andrew Farny of Salmon Arm and Kurt Gosselin were named to the blueline crews and Penticton goaltender Hunter Miska.
Joining Lucchini on the Second All Star Team are forwards Liam Blackburn of West Kelowna and Jacob Pritchard of Powell River. The defence features Nanaimo’s star rookie Yanni Kaldis and Gabe Bast of Penticton. Guillaume Decelles of Nanaimo was picked as the goaltender.
The All Rookie Team features Kaldis and Supinski along with goaltender Aidan Pelino of Chilliwack, defencemen Dante Fabbro of Penticton and forwards picked Liam Finlay of Vernon and Tyson Jost of Penticton.
Friday brings Game 1 of the Fred Page Cup BCHL Finals and sees the top-two teams from the regular season meet up for the right to advance to the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.
The Penticton Vees have home-ice advantage by virtue of the fact they are the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy winners as they finished first place overall in the regular season after a 44-9-3-2 record for 93 points. Nanaimo went 37-16-0-5 for 79 points to claim the Island Division regular season crown. They also had the second-best goal differential in the league at +68. Penticton was +101 in that department but their 216 goals for the campaign were second to Nanaimo’s 235.
Neither team has won in the other team’s building this season.
