Abbotsford volleyball fans were treated to some top-notch CIS preseason action on Tuesday evening at Yale Secondary, and local product Steve Marshall stole the show.

The Mennonite Educational Institute grad unleashed a serving barrage in the fifth set, registering four aces in a row at one point, to lead the Trinity Western Spartans men’s squad past the UBC Thunderbirds (25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-6).

With the Spartans leading 8-4 in the fifth, Marshall went to the line and simply dominated with a devastating jump serve that helped the defending national champs cruise through the final set after what was a back-and-forth battle to that point.

The match represented a homecoming for Trinity’s Brad Kufske and UBC’s Ian Perry, who were teammates on a Yale Lions team that finished fifth at AAA high school provincials in 2008. The TWU roster also featured MEI products Marshall, Ben Ball, John Wiebe and Tyler Koslowsky.
