Port McNeill defenseman Thor Rosback helped Team Stars skate to the title Sunday in the Male U17 BC Cup hockey tournament at Salmon Arm.
Team Stars rolled to a 6-2 win over Team Flyers in the final to take the trophy in the elite tournament for B.C.’s top age-group players.
Robert Cahill of Port Hardy also competed in the tournament. His Team Canucks squad claimed bronze with a 3-0 win over Team Sabres in the third-place game.
The two players, teammates for the North Island Eagles midget program last season, earned berths during district tryouts in Lake Cowichan in early April. They were matched on teams with players from other areas in the province in the jamboree-style tournament format.
In addition to playing with the Eagles in the recently completed season, Rosback was affiliated with the Campbell River Storm and played several games for the junior B team during the season.
BC Hockey’s High-Performance U17 program is specifically designed for players completing their first season of midget eligibility and playing midget or junior hockey.
Earlier, Port Hardy’s Curtis McCarrick competed in the Male U16 BC Cup and Port McNeill’s Samantha Dutcyvich skated in the Female U18 BC Cup tourney.
