A downpour turned the Wastelands Motocross Park into a mud puddle on Sunday, but it didn’t slow down the action very much.

The Nanaimo venue hosted thousands of motorbike enthusiasts for the Canadian Motosport Racing Corporation’s Monster Energy Motocross Nationals.

Matt Goerke won the MX1 main event as the rider from Daytona Beach, Fla., won both his motos after taking the lead off the start of both races.

Three-time CMRC national champion Colton Facciotti finished second in both motos and Bobby Kiniry took third place overall after finishing fifth, then third.

Fan favourite Dusty Klatt of Campbell River had to settle for seventh overall after finishing 12th, then sixth.

Racing was more unpredictable in MX2 competition, as the two motos played out quite differently.

Teddy Maier was the winner, as he followed up a seventh-place finish in the first moto with a first-place result in the second moto. Kyle Beaton placed second overall, finishing second, then sixth, and Jared Allison was third as he came sixth in the first moto and third in the second. Jeremy Medaglia won the first MX2 moto of the day but a 12th-place result in the second moto left him just off the podium.
