A dramatic triple-overtime victory highlighted the W.J. Mouat Grade 9 girls basketball team’s run to a silver medal at the provincial championships in Richmond last week.
The Hawks opened the tournament with wins over Brock Middle of Kamloops and G.W. Graham of Chilliwack, which set up a date with the Riverside Rapids of Port Coquitlam in Friday’s semifinals. The two teams pushed each other to three OT periods, with Mouat finally claiming a thrilling 54-49 victory.
In the gold medal game vs. Immaculata of Kelowna, the Hawks fell behind by 16 points in the third quarter, but battled their way back to within four. They weren’t able to close the gap any further, though, as Immaculata fended them off down the stretch to clinch the title.
Mouat’s Victoria Jacobse was tournament MVP, while Sarah Spring was named a tourney all-star. Tianna Sarra and Marianne Spring were also recognized with player of the game awards.
