Mustangs in Kelowna for field hockey Valley Finals

The Princess Margaret Mustangs are playing their season finale at the Valley Finals.

The Princess Margaret Mustangs field hockey team is wrapping up their season today in Kelowna for the South Okanagan AA Valley Finals.

Oliver, South Kamloops and OKanagan Mission from Kelowna are competing for two positions to advance to provincials in Surrey.

The Mustangs are fresh off of earning a split in the South Zone final in Oliver on Wednesday. In their opening game, the Mustangs shutout the Summerland Rockets 1-0. Makeena Hartmann was set up by Meghan McCafferty and Marie Schottenhaml.

“Summerland played very hard,” said Mustangs co-coach Brenda Kelly, adding that her team created many scoring chances. “It was a great game.  Good sportsmanship and lots of hard work by both teams.”

Emily Trupp earned the shutout in goal, while Hartmann earned most valuable player in that game.

In their second game against the Southern Okanagan Secondary Hornets from Oliver, the Mustangs lost 2-0. The Mustangs earned the praise of the Hornets coach who told the team they were strong and hard to score against.

“It was a very even game with goal scoring chances by both teams,” said Kelly.

Trupp earned MVP, while Joycelyn Legary, Alice James, Meghan McCafferty and Kayla Francisco were standouts on defence.
