A pair of Langley Mustangs Track and Field athletes took a step towards their goal of representing Canada at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) wold championships.
Competing at the Canadian track and field championships in Moncton, N.B. They were held June 20 to 23.
Kyle Nielsen successfully defended his Canadian title in the javelin with a winning throw of 46.23m to beat out former Olympian Curtis Moss.
And in the long jump, Robbie Gallaugher set not only a personal best, but a Mustangs club record with a leap of 7.62m. That was good enough to earn himself a bronze medal.
Both athletes have achieved a top three placing in their respective events but still need to reach the necessary standard in order to qualify for the world championships, which will be held Aug. 10 to 18 in Moscow, Russia.
They have until July 29 to do so.
“Stoked on the win, but the icing on the cake would be a standard for worlds,” Nielsen said.
“I know it’s there…. just a matter of everything coming together at the right time.”
