Nanaimo high school athletes win Island track championships

Hassy Fashina Bombata of Wellington Secondary School is Vancouver Island's senior girls' champion in the 100-metre dash.

Indications are that the city’s track and field athletes are going to be highly competitive at provincials in Nanaimo next month.

Several local high school athletes won Island championships last week in Victoria.

Hassy Fashina Bombata of Wellington Secondary School won the senior girls’ 100m dash in 12.30 seconds, not far behind the Island record of 12.21. Fashina Bombata also took first in the 200m in 25.48 seconds.

Also representing Wellington, Alyssa Mousseau broke her own Island record to win the senior girls’ 800m in 2:12.81.

Also at the senior level, Carter Higgins of Dover Bay won the 400m hurdles in 58.46 seconds and Nanaimo District Secondary School athletes swept the pole vault with Jason Clare setting an Island record of 4.45m and Maya Asselin-Debelic winning with a 2.8m leap.

In junior competition, Dover Bay’s Jackson Isnor won both the 800m and the 1,500, with Dover teammate Linden Kaps finishing second in both races. Hope Stewart of John Barsby Secondary School won the 800m by 10 seconds, finishing in 2:21.50, and also won the 1,500m. Other junior champions are Jessica Katzberg of Barsby, hammer throw; and Marina Andersen of NDSS, race walk.
