Vancouver Island University’s soccer teams didn’t allow a single goal against on a road trip this past weekend.

The Mariners men’s soccer teams defeated the Douglas Royals 1-0 on Saturday in Coquitlam, then blanked the Kwantlen Eagles 2-0 the next day in Surrey.

VIU’s women’s side blew away Douglas 5-0 on Saturday, then played to a scoreless draw against the Eagles.

In the first game for the men, Blaze Roberts scored the only goal, defender Jeff Travis was a standout in his end of the pitch and Scott Brown registered the shutout.

The next day Jordan de Graaf and Victor Blasco tallied and Brown had another shutout.

“[We’re] very pleased with the way the team is responding to what we talk about and work on in training,” said Bill Merriman, the team’s coach, in a press release.

As for the VIU women, their blowout win came against a nationally ranked Douglas team they had lost to earlier this season.

“We felt we let one get away that day; I knew we were going to come out strong,” said Anup Kang, M’s coach, in a press release. “Our defence is playing at a very high level right now; we didn’t give anything away.”

Bronte Fitzsimmons, Maddy Dawson, Carli Rey, Kaylee Dodds and Kim Cardwell scored for VIU and Shelby Walker recorded the shutout.

Walker had another shutout Saturday, her fifth of the season.

The results mean both M’s teams are first in the Pacific Western Athletic Association. VIU’s men (7-0-2) have 23 points in the standings, more than double the second-placed team. VIU’s women (6-2-1) are one point up on Douglas.

GAME ON … The M’s are home Saturday (Oct. 4) to play the Quest Kermodes at Merle Logan Field. The women’s match is at 1 p.m. and the men play at 3 p.m.
