An offensive outbreak and a perfect penalty kill helped the Trinity Western Spartans snap a three-game losing streak.
The hockey team found their offence in a 6-2 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby on the final day of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League Showcase. The Spartans also managed to kill off seven man-advantage chances for the Eagles.
Each team played two games over the weekend with the Spartans falling 2-1 to the Selkirk Saints in their other contest.
TWU sits at 8-4-0-1.
“I thought it was one of our better performances of the year in terms of a full 60 minute effort,” commented TWU head coach Barret Kropf.
“It was nice to see the guys battling and really just playing for each other in terms of not being selfish and trying to do things on their own. It was a solid effort doing the little things for each other like battling and winning loose pucks and then creating turnovers and offence off of the turnover.
The teams were tied at two midway through the second period before Andrew Wheeler and Blair Murphy struck for goals two minutes apart for a 4-2 lead heading into the intermission.
Ryan Scott and Brettt Wur — with a short-handed goal — padded the lead in the third.
Dirk de Waal and Wheeler had the two goals.
Against the Saints, Jamie Russell had the lone TWU goal.
“We are thankful for the win and getting us off the slide and now we can start building on it,” Kropf said.
The Spartans host the Victoria Vikings on Jan. 22 at the Langley Events Centre.
