Langley Rivermen head coach Steve O’Rourke will be a guest speaker at the inaugural Hockey Coaching Conference.

O’Rourke, who takes over as the junior A Rivermen’s head coach and general manager, will conduct a skill defenceman development workshop on July 30.

The two-day conference, which begins July 29, will be held at the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre. It is being hosted by the Coaches Site, an online resource for coaches.

“I’m excited to meet and work with amateur coaches,” O’Rourke said.

“I have been fortunate to benefit from the insight of many great coaches throughout my career and look forward to sharing my knowledge of developing defencemen with fellow coaches at the conference.”

O’Rourke joins Langley after two seasons with the Calgary Flames organization as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat.

The former defenceman played seven seasons of pro hockey after being drafted by the New York Islanders in 1992. O’Rourke holds an MBA in sports management and a BA in kinesiology.

“As an organization, we are committed to becoming a part of the local hockey community and having Steve work with minor hockey coaches from across the Lower Mainland and B.C. will be a great opportunity,” said Taylor Henderson, the Rivermen’s director of operations.
