Overtime win helps Thunderbirds ground Rockets

Fraser Valley scores late in regulation, then pots OT winner against Okanagan in major midget hockey

Minutes away from defeat, Dawson Penner scored to force overtime and Nowel Maarhuis capped the comeback in a 2-1 victory for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds were facing the Okanagan Rockets in a weekend set with the visiting Rockets scoring a 4-1 win in game two to earn the split. Both games were at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.

The split leaves Fraser Valley with a record of 11-7-3-1 and fifth place in the BC Major Midget Hockey League standings.

The Rockets (16-4-0-2) sit in second place.

Boston Bilous earned the victory in Saturday’s game.

Sunday’s contest saw Jonathan Rees tie the score at one for the T-Birds in the first period before the Rockets scored the final three goals for the 4-1 victory.

Fraser Valley is in Trail this weekend for a pair of games against the Kootenay Ice.
