Abbotsford’s college volleyball teams were on Vancouver Island on the weekend, and it was the Columbia Bible College women who fared the best.
The Bearcats women swept a pair of games in Victoria against the Camosun Chargers, winning in straight sets on Friday and in four sets Saturday.
April van Wieren led the way offensively with 17 points on Friday, including 13 kills, three stuff blocks and an ace, while Jill Ratzlaff added 11 kills and added 16 digs on defence.
On Saturday, van Wieren picked up right where she left off, racking up 18 points on 11 kills, four stuff blocks and three aces. Ratzlaff and Sadie Ball chipped in with nine kills apiece as the Bearcats improved to 7-8, good for fourth place in the PacWest conference.
• The CBC men’s volleyball team posted a hard-earned split at Camosun, losing 3-2 on Friday before bouncing back with a 3-1 win Saturday.
Will Quiring led the ‘Cats with 21 kills on Friday, while Matt Kaminski had 17. Middle blocker Danny Grant had a big game in the rematch, with 12 kills and six blocks, while Quiring had 19 kills.
“I was really pleased with how the team responsded in Saturday’s game after a tough loss the day before,” said head coach Rocky Olfert, whose team is third in the PacWest at 10-6. “Camosun played us tough and we really had to work for our points.”
The Bearcats volleyball teams are at home this weekend against Douglas College (Friday and Saturday, women 6 p.m., men 7:45 p.m.).
• The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyballers were in Nanaimo for a first-place showdown with the Vancouver Island University Mariners, and it was the Mariners emerging with a pair of four-set victories.
With the victories, the Mariners (15-1) solidified their grip on top spot in the PacWest, while the second-place Cascades fell to 14-4.
• The Cascades men’s volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-sets losses against VIU. At 6-12, they’re tied for fourth place in the PacWest.
The UFV volleyballers are on the road this weekend for a Friday-Saturday set at Capilano University.
• On the PacWest basketball scene, the CBC teams suffered a sweep in Prince George on Saturday, as they fell to the UNBC Timberwolves.
The Bearcats women (0-9) dropped a 116-56 decision to the first-place T-Wolves, while the men (1-8) lost 104-77.
The CBC hoopsters take the ferry to Vancouver Island this weekend to face VIU on Friday and Camosun on Saturday.
