Chilliwack athletes did well on the water at the BC Summer Games, winning eight individual medals in canoe and kayak races.
Austin Atkins earned double gold in the boys’ K1 (single person kayak) slalom and C1 (single-person canoe) slalom.
Rhys Taylor finished second in both races.
Maddison Atkins finished first in the girls’ K1 slalom, adding bronze in the C1 race. Isabel Taylor won that race and scored silver in the K1.
These athletes won many more medals on the team side.
Chilliwack Centre of Excellence coach Jon Allen guided the Cariboo-North East zone to bronze in the two-person 2000 metre canoe race.
Still in the water, Chilliwack’s Olivia Strickland shone in synchronized swimming, winning silver in the tier four/five solo event.
Back on land, Kate Stuart, Deanna Tuchscherer and Jaya Bannerman were part of the gold-medal winning Fraser Valley girls’ basketball team.
Marley Edwards helped his Fraser Valley boys’ soccer team to gold.
Riley Folk and Dylan Janzen earned silvers with the Fraser Valley boys’ softball squad and Deseray Smith was part of the gold medal winning Fraser Valley equestrian team.
Track athlete Rowan Hamilton collected silver in the boys’ shot-put and hammer-throw events.
Marcus Aubin teamed with Devon Kular (Abbotsford), Will Riley (Langley) and Luke Forsyth (Surrey) to win silver in the boys’ 4x400m relay.
