Campbell River Comets Seever Rondquist and Brendan Hoff made the Zone 6 Summer Games Team with strong performances at the Garriock BC Summer Games Trials Meet in Duncan last weekend.
Hoff won the 1,200 meter run and finished a strong second in the 2,000 and 800 meter run. He had personal best in all three events.
Hoff has had to get in shape fast after dealing with injuries and sickness the last two weeks in May prior to the BC high school championships.
But after the high schools he was able to get in some strong workouts.
Rondquist and Hoff have five weeks to prepare for the Summer Games to beat the best runners in BC who are one year older then Hoff. Hoff has so far managed to get in the top ten of all time in B.C. for the 2,000 and 1,200 meter running events.
Rondquist won his javelin throw, shot put and came from behind in the discus to take the lead with a great throw and personal best, but the last thrower managed to put together a great throw also, and narrowed out Seever’s sweep of all three throwing events by .4 of a meter. It was a great weekend for Rondquist.
He still has lots of training to do to improve with all three events. Rondquist has manage to get in the top 10 of all time in B.C. with all three events this year and is only two meters behind the number one spot for javelin, which is 51.54, set in 1996.
“I am very pleased with Brendan and Seever because they not only are great mentors, coachable and team players as athletes but have what is necessary as talented athletes, which is the will to give it their best in training, at home with their nutrition and hydration, etc.,” Comets coach Dale Trenholm said. “It is this consistent attitude and effort that carries over to when they compete. I only see them getting better and better.”
Athletes can try and qualify for as many events as they want but can only compete in three events at The Games.
The 2012 BC Summer Games will be held in Surrey July 19-22 for athletes 14 & 15.
