A pair of Chilliwack natives are at National Hockey League prospect camps this week, learning how things work in the big leagues.
Goaltender Thomas Heemskerk signed as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks two years ago and is looking to make the jump to the pro ranks.
Heemskerk spent last season with the Western Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Warriors, appearing in 65 games.
He won 36 with a 2.94 goals-against average and .908 save percentage.
Heemskerk also played for the WHL’s Everett Silvertips and Kootenay Ice.
Vancouver Giant Wes Vannieuwenhuizen has joined the Edmonton Oilers for prospect camp.
Vannieuwenhuizen spent all of last season skating for the G-men, logging 64 games with eight assists and 157 penalty minutes.
The 19-year-old missed several games due to suspension, sidelined after a hit from behind on Chilliwack Bruins forward Robin Soudek.
The six-foot-three and 205 pound defenceman played 57 games with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles during the 2009-10 season.
