Rams fall to Raiders

Vancouver Island uses strong second half to rout Langley

Nick Downey scored twice more to bump his lead atop the B.C. Junior Football Conference standings in total touchdowns, but the Langley Rams went down in defeat, 56-19 to the Vancouver Island Raiders.

The game was played Saturday at Nanaimo’s Caledonia Park.

Downey leads the BCFC with 15 touchdowns, two ahead of the Raiders’ Andrew Smith, who had one score against Langley.

The Raiders improved to 9-0 while the Rams lost their second straight and fell to 4-5.

Langley closes the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Victoria to play the Westshore Rebels (5-4). Should the Rams win by a touchdown or more, they will finish third. Regardless of the outcome, Langley’s semifinal playoff game will be on the road.

Downey scored two touchdowns on five catches, totaling 128 yards, from quarterback Jon Roney.

But that was all the offence the junior football squad could muster, as they were held to just 228 yards of net offence.

Nick Naylor also had two field goals.

By comparison, the Raiders racked up 450 yards of offence — 206 along the ground and 244 through the air — as well as seven touchdowns. They also scored on a punt return.

The Raiders blew open the game with three touchdowns in the third quarter, turning a 21-13 lead into a 42-13 advantage.

Nick Felicella had an interception while Spensor Farbatuk set a new Canadian Junior Football League record with his 17th solo special teams of the season.

Farbatuk, a Walnut Grove graduate and product of the North Langley Minor Football program, is in his second season with the Rams.
