Junior A hockey season will once again begin with Bauer BCHL Showcase event at Prospera Centre

Rivermen season kicks off Sept. 6 in Chilliwack

The Langley Rivermen will kick off the 2013/14 season against the Trail Smoke Eaters.

The two junior A hockey clubs will play on Sept. 6 at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre as part of the Bauer BCHL Showcase. They face off at 7 p.m. on the secondary rink.

The showcase will see each BCHL hockey club play a pair of games in Chilliwack over the course of the weekend.

Last year’s inaugural showcase — which was also held in Chilliwack — drew close to 200 scouts from the college and professional ranks.

The Rivermen’s second game will be on Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. against the Merritt Centennials.

The full schedule is expected to be finalized by the end of the month.

The league also held its annual general meeting in Richmond and announced a few moves.

The league will play a 58-game schedule next season — up from the 56 in 2012/13.

The BCHL also announced that as a result of their equipment agreement with Bauer, all players must use the Bauer Supreme Stick. Failure to do so will result in financial penalties to the hockey club.

And lastly, Brad Lazarowich has officially joined the league’s officiating program as the associate director of officiating to head director Derek Adams. Lazarowich was able to monitor and provide mentorship to young officials last season during the NHL lockout and will continue to be a resource to the league in developing the officiating program.

Lazarowich, a Walnut Grove resident, has been an NHL linesman since 1986.
