Langley’s Lisa Roman was announced as one of 28 athletes who will represent Canada next week at the first World Rowing Cup event of 2016.
It will be held in Varese, Italy from April 15 to 17.
“Canadian rowers are heading into an intense period of competition with the Olympic and Paralympic Games quickly approaching,” said Peter Cookson, the high performance director for Rowing Canada Aviron.
“These athletes have proven time and again their determination and commitment to excellence. The World Cups will be a perfect opportunity for them to demonstrate the hard work they have put in during the winter, and to work on the things that will lead to success in Rio in a few months time.”
Roman will compete with the women’s eight team.
The 26-year-old rows out of the UWO (University of Western Ontario) Rowing Club..
The D.W. Poppy graduate took up the sport in 2008 when she was at the University of the Fraser Valley and then later rowed at the Washington State University.
Roman has been on the Canadian senior women’s national team the last three years, helping win bronze in 2013, silver in 2014 and then bronze again last year at the world rowing championships.
This will be the Canadian team’s first competition since the championships back in September.
The Canadian team will also compete in Lucerne, Switzerland at World Cup II from May 27 to 29 and then the final World Cup event will be June 17-19 in Poznan, Poland.
The athletes competing at each regatta will be announced prior to each event.
Canada has qualified six boats for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
The final Canadian roster for that is expected to be named June 28.
