Sardis secondary school is adding a third academy program, with plans to launch a golf academy in the fall.
The school made a presentation at the School District 33 meeting Tuesday night, and the proposal was approved in principal. That means SSS can move ahead with plans to start in December 2012.
SSS already has a baseball and hockey academy.
SSS will partner with the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club and new head instructor Jennifer Greggain.
“Part of my vision is to create one of the best, if not the best, junior programs in the Fraser Valley,” the former LPGA tour player said enthusiastically. “I want to get some good athletes coming out of Chilliwack, and there’s no reason we can’t with the resources that we have.”
CG&CC will provide the facility and necessary equipment, and Greggain will coordinate with SSS golf coach Tom MacIsaac.
“The students will be at the course two or three times a week for golf-specific training, and back at the school at other times for fitness and other components,” Greggain elaborated. “We’ll be using the Titleist Performance Institute assessment to gauge their abilities, and developing individualized training programs for each of them.”
The course fee will be $1,800 and the course will be available to students of any skill level in Grades 10-12.
Important to note, the academy will be open to students who do not attend SSS.
Students will need a junior membership at CG&CC, at a cost of $300.
“I am very passionate about working with students, working with players of all abilities from beginners to elite, and helping to mold them,” Greggain said. “There are lots of opportunities out there for students who are willing to put in the work.”
The plan is to have the academy run throughout the entire school year.
