Canada’s women’s soccer team picked up perhaps the biggest win in the history of the program on Friday, beating Great Britain 2-0 in the Olympic quarter-finals.

The triumph ensured that Team Canada will play for an Olympic medal for the first time ever. They face the favoured Americans in the semifinals on Monday at legendary Old Trafford, home field of Manchester United.

Playing before a raucous pro-Britain crowd at Coventry, Canada scored twice in the first half, then smothered the host squad in the second.

Abbotsford midfielder Sophie Schmidt set up the first goal in the 12th minute, sending a corner kick to Jonelle Filigno at the top of the box, and her highlight-reel volley found the top corner behind British keeper Karen Bardsley.

Christine Sinclair made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, curling a free kick into the bottom corner.
