It was good news/bad news for the Langley Blaze senior men’s baseball team.
The good news is the Langley Blaze stopped their four-game losing streak.
The bad news is the team managed just two wins out of their five games.
The Blaze split a doubleheader on Saturday (July 13) with the Burnaby Bulldogs, winning the opener at Robert Burnaby Park 10-1 behind three home runs and five RBIs from Scott Webster. Tyler Willson also had a pair of RBIs while Graig Merritt, Zach Mihic and Aaron Horanski each drove in one.
Langley could have used some of that offence in the second game as Burnaby pitcher Mitch Hodge — a fourth round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals — threw a two-hitter in a 1-0 Bulldogs victory.
Shane Kraemer was tagged with the loss, despite giving up just one run on three hits over five innings.
On Sunday, Langley was again at Robert Burnaby Park, this time facing Burnaby Collegiate.
And the first game was a slugfest with the teams combining for 23 runs. Unfortunately for Langley, they were on the losing end of the 12-11 final as Burnaby scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh.
All of the runs came with two outs.
Jovan Ewusie drove in three runs, while Bob Foerster, Horanski, Merritt and Webster brought home two apiece.
The second game saw Langley continue to swing hot bats as they scored 10 runs in the first two innings and then held on for the 10-6 win.
Corey Parsons earned the win, allowing five runs over four innings. Cam Challand had a one-two-three inning — with a pair of strikeouts — before Karl Malacek pitched the sixth and seventh innings, striking out three and giving up one unearned run on two walks.
And Langley’s busy three-day stretch concluded with a home game at McLeod Park on Monday (July 15) against the Burnaby Bulldogs with the visitors pulling off the 4-1 victory.
Merritt had the lone RBI, scoring Horanski with a fifth-inning single.
The Blaze dropped to 4-5 in the Pacific Metro Baseball League standings and 7-5 in the Pacific International League standings.
