A pair of women’s rowers from the St. Michaels University School scored two gold medals and SMUS won four overall at the
Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association championships last weekend.
Hosted on the prestigious Royal Canadian Henley course in St Catharine’s, Ont., the massive regatta brought in 2,500 rowers in 797 boats from Canada and the U.S.A.
Seniors Hannah Neilson and Michelle Aylard led the way for SMUS, as the school finished seventh out of 128 schools.
Neilson and Aylard won gold in the women’s lightweight pair and took gold in the women’s coxed four with Alexis Thind, Cortney Ewonus and Chris Fenje.
Each of St. Michaels’ 21 rowers competed in at least one final, including Grade 8 coxswain, Sage Friswell.
SMUS also came close to gold in the junior men’s lightweight coxed four as Luke Friswell, Taylor Ellison, Josef Svorkdal, Liam Hyatt and Erynn Pawluk won silver. The same team, with Marcus Lelewski subbed in for Svorkdal, won bronze in the junior men’s “open” coxed four.
