Spartans coach adds international experience

A coach with international experience will lead the Trinity Western Spartans track and field and cross-country programs.

The local university named Surrey’s Laurier Primeau the head coach of the two programs, which are entering their second year in Spartan athletics.

Primeau relishes the opportunity to help a relatively new program.

“Being able to start essentially from scratch means that I can put my footprint on this team,” he said.

For the past two years, Primeau was the head coach of Scottish Athletics and guided the team to an 18th place finish at the Commonwealth Games in India.

Prior to that, he spent seven years with Canada’s national track and field team where he was responsible for jumps, combined events and relays. During that time, he was also an assistant with the UBC program and an administrator for the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track and Field Club.

In 2007, he was the recipient of the outstanding coach award for B.C. Athletics.

He is also a former athlete with Canada’s senior track and field team from 1990 to 1998, competing in the 400m hurdles and 4×400 relay. In 1991, he won Sport BC’s Harry Jerome Comeback athlete of the year award after returning to competitive track after a battle with cancer.
