Spartans pound Dinos, win Canada West bronze

Their season may have ended, but the Trinity Western Spartans men’s soccer team went out on a winning note.

Less than 24 hours after having their dreams of advancing to the U Sport national championships dashed in overtime, the Spartans rebounded with a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Dinos to win the Canada West bronze medal.

The game was played on Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.

The bronze medal was TWU’s first Canada West medal since 2008.

And it was a local trio leading the way for the Spartans as Aldergrove’s Joel Waterman and Langley’s Vaggeli Boucas and Mitchell Urzinger each scored once. The other goal was a Dinos own-goal.

Andrew Hicks stopped three shots for the victory.

The Spartans lost 1-0 in the Canada West semifinals to the top-seed and eventual champion Alberta Golden Bears.

Alberta, ranked No. 2 nationally, scored the game’s only goal in the 111th minute. It was the only shot to elude Hicks as the TWU goalkeeper finished with 10 saves.
