The Trinity Western Spartans made few mistakes in rolling to a straight sets victory.
The No. 3 ranked Spartans women’s volleyball hit .391 as a team and committed just eight attacking errors in dispatching the Brandon Bobcats 3-0 (25-20,25-14,25-13) on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.
The Spartans also beat Brandon 3-0 (25-16,25-17,27-25) on Friday to improve to 17-3 on the season.
Head coach Ryan Hofer liked his team’s consistency on Saturday, especially after they hit just .120 with 29 errors the night before.
“We just need to control our side of the court,” he said. “We need to control from the baseline with our serve. We need to pass the ball well. Brandon is a good serving team so we had to control it up and get it up and forward so Nikki (Cornwall) can work with it and find our attackers.”
Cornwall finished with 33 assists and 10 digs.
The attack was led by Sophie Carpentier (11 kills), Elly Wendel (10 kills) and Brie O’Reilly (five kills) as the trio combined for 25 kills and just two attacking errors.
Ashtyn McKenzie (four aces) and Wendel (three aces) were both also dominant from the service line.
Wendel led the team with 15 kills and 15 digs on Friday. Cornwall had 38 assists and 15 digs and Rachel Flink had 13 digs.
The second-ranked Spartans men’s team also took a pair of matches over the visiting Bobcats, winning 3-1 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday to improve to 18-2.
Head coach Ryan Hofer liked his team’s response after a tough test the night before.
“I’m really proud of our guys for responding to the way we played last night and responding to the things our opponent was doing to us. We responded both emotionally and tactically,” he said.
“We talked about the mental test they put us under last night that we failed. The same test was there tonight and we had success.”
The Spartans won 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16, hitting .434 as a team and collecting 11 blocks over the No. 9 Bobcats.
Eric Loeppky (12 kills), Blake Scheerhoorn (10 kills) and Ryan Sclater (10 kills) led the attack. Loeppky also delivered five aces and Aaron Boettcher had eight kills and seven blocks.
In Friday’s match, the Spartans won 3-1 (25-17,25-19,28-30,25-20).
Sclater led the way with 24 kills while Loeppky had 13 kills and another three aces.
Both TWU teams are on the road this weekend in Winnipeg to face the Wesmen.
