The Nanaimo Museum announced this year’s inductees in the Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame. Set to be enshrined next week are lacrosse player Don Ashbee, alpine skier Allison Forsyth, sprinter Mary Thomasson and sports builder Jim Gold.
Ashbee is already in the hall as a member of the 1956 Nanaimo Timbermen, who won the Mann Cup national championship. He scored 880 goals over his career and was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1974.
Forsyth is a two-time Olympian, representing Canada in 2002 in Salt Lake City and 2006 in Turin, Italy. She was an eight-time national champion.
Thomasson (née Frizzell) competed in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, winning a silver medal in the 4×100-metre relay in a photo finish with Team U.S.A.
Gold was a high-calibre soccer player with the University of British Columbia and the Canadian Army team. After his competitive career he was taught phys-ed and coached soccer in Nanaimo.
The four will be inducted Sept. 22.
