Ironman Canada, Bantam Vees and men's rec hockey highlighted in sports briefs

Ironman Canada Whistler-bound

World Triathlon Corporation announed on Thursday afternoon that Whistler is hosting the 2013 Ironman Canada triathlon. There was some initial confusion from Tourism Whistler, who appeared to have jumped the gun on the announcement and posted it on their webpage before the official announcement. That was taken down, which was followed by the official announcement from WTC. The event is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013.

While the event is heading to the Lower Mainland, iconic triathlon announcer Steve King will not. King will be calling the action for Challenge Penticton on the same day. Challenge Penticton issued a release on Thursday morning regarding the announcement.

“I am honoured to be asked to continue in the commentating role,” said King in a press release. “I am very proud of what Penticton has done for triathlon and its commitment to provide a challenging course, support for charities, community involvement and the best possible race experience for the athletes, volunteers, spectators and sponsors alike.”

Bantam Vees take fourth

Penticton Smile Enhancement bantam Tier 2 Vees placed fourth during a Thanksgiving weekend tournament in Port Moody. The Vees went 2-1 in round robin play. Playing for third, the Vees lost to the Panthers 2-1 after the shootout. Leading the scoring for the Vees were Tyler Maser with three goals. Reid Newson and Michael MacLean scored twice, while singles came from Josh Maser and Myles Thibodeau. Strong defensive play by Aiden Hutcheson, Owen Haggerty, Daylan Devlin, Greg Brydon, Simon Snymand and Nick Graham helped the Vees allow only 10 goals in the five games with Alyck Coombes and Shane Farkas in net.

Men’s rec hockey

In Penticton Men’s Rec Hockey action, the Hitmen dumped the Game Time Sports Wolverines, 7-2, while the EcoDry Ice Dogs doubled the Cawston Cold Storage Wingmen 4-2. Bar One Argo Bisons doubled up the Mule Broncos 6-3.
