New tennis season served up
The Penticton Tennis Club is getting ready for the 2014 season. The club is coming off a successful 2013 season that saw their membership numbers increase from 91 to 161. This Saturday at 10 a.m., the club is having a spring cleanup and ask people to stop by and help. On April 11 at 6 p.m., a membership form will be updated on line at www.pentictontennisclub.com. No changes to pricing for 2014. The club encourages people to bring their tennis racquets to make it a social night. There will also be sign up for spring leagues. For those who can’t attend, memberships can also be printed off and mailed with a cheque. Steve Hunn is offering free lessons starting April 2-30. Juniors will run from 5-6 p.m., while adults are from 6–7 p.m.
Baseball equipment for donation
Wave International Baseball Academy/LABC Team Canada is having an equipment fundraiser for children of the Dominican Republic April 5. Team Canada reps will be accepting used baseball equipment in Penticton at the Wave Baseball Academy Open Clinic/Carmi Baseball Field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wave International Baseball Academy/LABC Team Canada has teamed up with Beyond the Beach Children’s Foundation.
Okanagan basketball all-star game
Penticton’s Dylan Moorman, Megan Admussen-Blair and Jas Sahota were among more than 70 high school hoopsters that played in four Okanagan all-star basketball at UBC-O March 29. The games highlighted the best talent in the Okanagan Valley with games showcasing junior and senior boys and girls.
Moorman, a Pen High Laker, scored all of his Light team’s team-high nine points in the first half. The Light lost to Dark 57-48 in the junior boys game. Admussen-Blair of the Princess Margaret Mustangs scored 15 points to earn her Light team player of the game honors in a 88-77 loss in senior action. Sahota chipped in 12 points for the Dark team in a 105-82 loss to the Light team.
OHA girls win under-18 gold with Canada
Micah Har, Hannah Miller and Brielle belle rive helped Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 team win its third consecutive gold medal at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship, defeating the United States 5-1 in Sunday’s final at the Budapest Ice Center. In the preliminary round, Canada beat Japan 7-1, blanked Finland 7-0 and shut out the Czech Republic 5-0, for a perfect record and first place in Group A. Canada and the United States have met in all seven gold medal games at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship. The Canadians won the world championship last year, edging the Americans 2-1 in overtime in Heinola, Finland, as well as in 2012, shutting them out 3-0 in Zlin, Czech Republic. Canada also won in 2010, defeating its cross-border rival 5-4 in overtime in Chicago, Ill.
Okanagan College Half Marathon
The Okanagan College Half Marathon is April 6. Registration is open for the 10-kilometre race taking place in Kelowna. The event raises money to support College students involved in recreation and athletics. There is also a half marathon and relay race.
