Power chair soccer tournament and Granfondo among events highlighted in sports briefs

Power chair soccer tournament

The 10th annual B.C. Storm Powersoccer tournament will be played in Penticton this weekend. All the action can be seen at Princess Margaret Secondary School and Skaha Lake Middle School Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. There will be six teams competing.

Granfondo bike contest

The Valley First Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan hits the streets of Penticton in less than 12 weeks. Last month it was announced that Canadian Olympian and now Canada Sports Hall of Fame inductee Alison Sydor will return. Other guest riders include members of the Bontrager professional cycling team, Jasper Stuyven of Belgium, James Oram of New Zealand and Canadian Antoine Duchesne. Jasper Stuyven will return for a second year coming off a massive victory at last month’s Volta ao Alentejo stage race in Portugal. Friday at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline to enter the race to win a Trek Madone carbon road bike by registering  at www.granfondoaxelmerckx.comfor the Cortofondo 55-kilometre race, the mediofondo 92-km event for the 160-km granfondo.

Pentictonite wins high school golf tournament

During Zone 2 junior golf action, at Nk’Mip Desert Canyon Golf Course, with the threat of snow lingering, Penticton’s Zachary Gardner was the winner as he shot a 73. This weekend’s events will be held at the Penticton Golf and Country Club Sunday and Summerland Golf Club Saturday.

Golf action

Bruce Johnston, Ken Robertshaw, Ralph Halsall, and Keith Sollitt won the Penticton senior mens golf shamble format (choosing best ball) with a score of 109 (-31). In Ladies Tuesday action, Judy Eathorne won the first flight with a score of 30. Second flight winner was Lorna Wyslouzil scoring 30.5

Mixed slo pitch action

In Penticton mixed slo pitch action, Konanz Chiropractic improved to 4-0 after they defeated the Brat Pack 13-11 in B division action. The Brat Pack was 6-0 heading into that game.
