Blue Corner Boxing Club head coach Ingo Schubert made a triumphant return to the ring last Friday at Cascades Casino in Langley.
As part of the regular Friday Night Fights promotion, Schubert, 51, took on Blue Corner boxer Calep Weitzel in a four-round exhibition bout. It marked Schubert’s first bout in nearly 18 years, and served as a fundraiser for his son’s hockey team, the Abbotsford bantam A2 squad.
The two traded some heavy hits – Schubert’s smooth style flowed as he bobbed, weaved and delivered surgically placed attacks to Weitzel’s body and head, while Weitzel responded with some shots that shook his teacher.
In the end, Schubert won in a split decision.
Kevin Enns, head coach of the bantam A2 hockey team, put up a good fight, but lost his light heavyweight match to Julian Kim of Port Kells.
BRUINS CAN’T PLAY GIANT-KILLERS
The Vancouver Northwest Giants proved their perch at the top of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League standings is no fluke, as they swept the Fraser Valley Bruins on the weekend.
The Giants knocked off the Bruins 3-0 in Saturday’s opener, and 4-1 on Sunday to run their league-leading record to 21-3-6. Craig Stewart notched the lone goal of the weekend for the Fraser Valley squad, which fell to 11-14-5.
