Abbotsford native Trevor Esau is joining the Simon Fraser University men’s hockey team for the 2013-14 season.

The 6’4” defenceman played three seasons of junior A hockey with the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings, racking up 42 points and 290 penalty minutes in 159 games. He also served as team captain in his final season.

“I’m excited to be coming to SFU,” said Esau. “I am excited to join the hockey program as I see an opportunity to be a part of a team with a tradition of winning and an organization that prides itself in being the best athletes on the ice, and best students in the classroom.”

LOCK SOLID AT B.C. AMATEUR

Abbotsford golfer Mitchell Lock turned in a solid 15th-place performance at the B.C. Amateur Championship in Radium Hot Springs and Invermere last week.

Lock, a former member of the University of the Fraser Valley golf team, carded rounds of 72, 73, 70 and 71 to finish at two over par. Charlie Hughes of Langley won the tournament, defeating Surrey’s Adam Svensson in a playoff.

WATER POLO GIRLS EXCEL AT NATIONALS

Brianna Utas, Emily Aikema and Paige Bennett of Abbotsford helped the B.C. under-16 girls water polo team win a silver medal at the National Youth Cup tournament in Montreal.

The provincial squad went undefeated en route to the title game, where they fell 10-8 to Quebec.

FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNEY THIS WEEKEND

The fourth annual Western Canadian Flag Football Championships will be staged at Exhibition Park this weekend.

The event begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, with games running through 3:15 p.m. On Sunday, action begins at 8:30 a.m., culminating in the championship game at 3:30 p.m.

Two local teams are in the field. The Abbotsford Ram Rods are in Division 1, while and entry from the Fraser Valley Touch Football League is in Division 3.

LEARN TO ROW

The Fraser Valley Rowing Club is holding learn-to-row orientation sessions on July 22 and 23.

BALL COACHING WITH CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Volleyball Canada’s Centre of Excellence has added Abbotsford native Ben Ball to its coaching staff in the Fraser Valley.

Ball, a graduate of Mennonite Educational Institute and Trinity Western University, won championships with both the Eagles and Spartans during his playing career. He was the CIS men’s volleyball player of the year in 2012.
