Adam Hadwin has qualified for the U.S. Open, one of golf’s four major championships.
The Abbotsford golfer carded rounds of 68 and 71 at a 36-hole sectional qualifier at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. on Monday. That left him tied for second, securing one of four available berths to the U.S. Open, which will be played next week at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
The Open will be Hadwin’s second PGA Tour event. He finished 37th and was the top Canadian at the RBC Canadian Open last year.
HOOPSTERS EARN TEAM CANADA TRYOUT
Yale Secondary grads Marek Klassen and Matt Letkeman have been invited to try out for the Canadian junior men’s basketball team.
Klassen and Letkeman played leading roles as the Lions won the 2010 B.C. AAA high school title, and both players are coming off terrific collegiate debuts. Klassen, a point guard, suited up for NAIA program Point Loma Nazarene University of San Diego. He led the Sea Lions in scoring and assists as a freshman, and earned all-conference honours.
Letkeman, a power forward, was named Canada West rookie of the year after averaging 7.8 points per game for the Calgary Dinos.
VIRTANEN GOING TO CAMP
Abbotsford hockey prospect Jake Virtanen has been selected to participate in the first annual Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp.
Hosted by the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), the camp runs in Mississauga, Ont. from Aug. 2-6. NHL veteran Gary Roberts will lead the event, which brings together 42 of the top bantam-aged players in Canada. The camp is designed to provide guidance in areas such as nutrition, strength and fitness, sports psychology and financial planning.
Virtanen, a forward, was picked first overall pick in the WHL bantam draft by the Calgary Hitmen last month.
