A major hockey festival is coming to Tradex in October, and an initial schedule of events has been released.

The event, known as “HockeyFest . . . Beyond the Pond”, runs Oct. 13-16. Events include a gala dinner benefitting Canuck Place Abbotsford, a series of speakers, an NHL alumni hockey game, and opening and closing ceremonies.

The festival will feature over 120,000 square feet of hockey exhibits, and content partners including the Hockey Hall of Fame, the NHL Alumni, the NHLPA’s Goals and Dreams Fund, and The Reach Gallery Museum.

“We look forward to showcasing some of our best artifacts outside of the Hockey Hall of Fame across Canada with HockeyFest while meeting some of the world’s greatest fans,” said Phil Pritchard, vice president and curator of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

HOCKEY STARS SHINE

Abbotsford was well-represented at the recent Lower Mainland spring hockey tournament in Delta.

Mathieu Caron and Matthew Konrad won the Mainland division title with the Vancouver Selects 2000 blue team, defeating the Kootenay Avalanche 4-2 in the final. Justin Hargrave and Dylan Stoltz won the Platinum division with the Vancouver Selects 2000 black squad. All four players were members of the Abbotsford atom Hawks AAA team last season.

ELITE RUGBY CAMP

B.C. Elite Youth Sevens head coach Shane Thompson will be holding an identification camp in Abbotsford on Sunday at Yale Secondary to evaluate male rugby players in the Valley East region.

The events runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is open to athletes in the U14 (born in 97/98), U16 (born 95/96) and U18 (born 93/94) age brackets. To register, contact Thompson at sthompson@bcrugby.com.

DOUBLES CHAMPS

Richard Brice and Jon Hawkes emerged victorious at the men’s doubles tournament at Great West Fitness on the weekend.

The Vancouver duo defeated Greg Nelmes of Langley and John Chow of Chilliwack in the final.
