Abbotsford hockey prospect Mark Isherwood has been named to the ECHL all-rookie team.
Isherwood, who plays for the Alaska Aces, leads all ECHL rookie defencemen in goals (15) and points (35) in 70 games. The 22-year-old played one season (2005-06) with the junior B Abbotsford Pilots and went on to play four full WHL seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers before turning pro.
SOCCER KICK-OFF
An event to launch the newly rebranded Magnuson Ford Mariners FC is set for Saturday.
The club, formerly known as the Abbotsford Soccer Association, struck a partnership deal in January with Magnuson Ford. The official launch event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Magnuson dealership at 32562 South Fraser Way. The festivities will include a barbecue, prizes, and a kicking cage, and the association’s new Soccer Express Adidas team wear will be unveiled.
ROAD RACING COMES TO MISSION
The Sports Car Club of B.C. opens its 2011 road race season April 16-17 at Mission Raceway Park.
A full weekend of racing action will include the first round of the Confederation of Autosport Car Clubs (CACC) championship, along with the season debut of the Westcoast Sportscar Championship (WSC). Gates open at 9 a.m.
YALEANS LAND ON ZONE HOCKEY SQUAD
The hockey academy at Yale Secondary has placed a dozen athletes on the Fraser Valley U16 boys team.
Yaleans on the zone squad include Jake Virtanen, Jared Virtanen, Zach Dyment, Matthew Painchaud, Matthew Revel, Mitchell Skapski, Kyle Baron, Mitchell Biermann, Issiah Piers, Ryan Simpson, Keanu Jarvis and Cameron Seto.
Other Abbotsford prospects to crack the roster include Kyle Clayton and Francis Bamford.
The Valley U16s will compete at the B.C. Cup in Kamloops at the end of April.
HOOPS TRYOUTS SET FOR TIP-OFF
The School Basketball Academy is hosting tryouts on Friday for a series of club teams for boys.
