Sports in brief: Team Canada comes calling for Craddock

University of the Fraser Valley men's basketball coach Barnaby Craddock has been named to Team Canada's coaching staff for the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China in August.

University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball coach Barnaby Craddock has been named to Team Canada’s coaching staff for the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China in August.

Craddock will be an assistant coach on Canada’s men’s basketball entry, working alongside head coach Kevin Hanson of UBC and fellow assistant John Campbell of Dalhousie. This is the first Universiade appointment for Craddock, who will be entering his fifth year at the helm of the Cascades this fall.

SEVENS HEAVEN

The Abbotsford Rugby Sevens festival is showcasing the sport at halftime of a B.C. Lions game.

On June 22, during the Lions’ CFL tilt with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Empire Field, organizers of the Abbotsford international rugby event will host an exhibition game between the Dog River Howlers and the Pacific Tyee. The Howlers are a Regina-based club, while the Tyee squad will be comprised of members of the Canadian national sevens team.

Phil Mack, Canada’s sevens player of the year, and Waisale Serevi, the Fijian rugby superstar regarded as the greatest sevens player ever, will be among the luminaries participating in the game.

The Abbotsford Rugby Sevens runs on July 23, and 14 teams are already confirmed for the international elite division, including sides from Canada, the United States, Kenya, the United Kingdom, Fiji, New Zealand, Mexico and the Cayman Islands. For more information, visit abbotsfordsevens.com.

CAMPS AT CBC

The Columbia Bible College Bearcats are hosting a pair of volleyball camps this summer.

The Bearcats girls camp, for athletes going into grades 7-12, runs Aug. 22-26. CBC volleyball coaches Duncan Harrison and Rocky Olfert will serve as lead instructors, and cost is $110.

The boys camp, for athletes going into Grades 8-12, is set for Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Olfert will lead the sessions, and the cost is $100.
