Sports in brief: UFV rowers excel at Western Canadians

The University of the Fraser Valley rowing team put a trio of boats into the finals at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships.

The University of the Fraser Valley rowing team put a trio of boats into the finals at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships at Burnaby Lake on Sunday.

The UBC Thunderbirds dominated the meet on both the men’s and women’s side, but UFV managed a third-place finish in the overall women’s standings thanks to a fourth-place result from Bethany Tait and Kaitlyn Block in the lightweight women’s pairs.

Scott Micona and Ryan Tucker were fifth in the men’s pairs, while Emmett Campbell was sixth in the lightweight men’s singles.

FIGURE SKATERS SHINE

The Abbotsford Skating Club had a trio of podium performances at the Super Series Autumn Leaves competition in Chilliwack last weekend.

Ceilidh Ross (gold ladies), Sarah Steberl (juvenile ladies) and the novice pairs duo of Megan Geddes and Gary Tsai each brought home bronze medals from the event.

LOKOMBO, HAWKS RACE PAST ROADRUNNERS

The W.J. Mouat Hawks defeated the Mission Roadrunners 54-12 in junior football action behind another huge outing from Nelson Lokombo.

The Hawks’ running back rushed 14 times for 213 yards and two touchdowns, with great blocking from the offensive line. Dion Pellerin, Cole Barker, Carson Setter and Cameron Tomm also rushed for TDs, while Pellerin added two interceptions on defence. The defensive backfield of

Jacob Solano, Matt Connor, and Elijah Falconer also excelled.

PHAM LEADS RAVENS

The Eugene Reimer Ravens knocked off the Howe Bulldogs 26-14 in Grade 8 football action this week.

Anthony Pham led the charge with three touchdowns, while Harjot Dhaliwal notched a TD and a two-point convert and Karn Minhas paced the defence with his strong tackling.
