Hannah Weinkauf’s bronze medal highlighted a series of strong performances for the Abbotsford Olympians swim club at the Mies Shootman Invitational Meet at UBC last weekend.
Weinkauf finished third in 50-metre freestyle in the 13-year-old girls division, setting a new personal best time of 29.44 seconds and establishing a new club record in the process. She also set new club standards in the 50 back, 100 back, 50 fly and 200 individual medley.
James Lee posted a provincial AA qualifying time in the 14-year-old boys 50 free, finishing eighth in 30.04. He set a club record in that event, and three others.
Tobyn Smith, age eight, competed in the girls 11-and-under category, and notched an impressive eighth-place result in the 400 IM against older athletes. She established nine club records at the meet.
Other club-record swims came from Maddie Charest, Katie Charest and Alex Simpson.
“We were up against some of the best swimmers in the Lower Mainland, so the competition was extremely tough,” Olympians coach Adrienne Goodey noted. “It was very encouraging to have swimmers make finals and some just missed out on finals by a couple of spots.
“I am so proud of my swimmers and the amount of hard work they put in.”
Registration for Abbotsford Olympians Swim Club is ongoing and they are currently offering a free month of swimming to new members. Call 604-825-1856 or visit the website www.abbotsfordolympians.com for more information.
