Sports stories from around the Shuswap

Fall soccer begins

Shuswap Youth Soccer Association’s fall recreational program runs Saturdays from Oct. 1 through Dec. 3. Cost is $40 for Tots ages three to five and $60 for ages six to 13. Register by Sept. 23. For details and a registration form, go to the Shuswap Youth Soccer Association website. For 2012 select and development, planning is beginning for the upcoming teams with the first round of player evaluations/tryouts scheduled for Oct. 1.

The annual general meeting is on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the SASCU Little Mountain Field House. It is important for members to attend and have their voices heard in order to help shape the direction of the club. SYSA is seeking board members for the 2011-12 season.

Shinney Hockey laces up

Youth Recreational Daytime Shinney Hockey is starting again in Salmon Arm. Though many who attend the program are home-schooled, some kids attending public school also join in. Ice times are Thursday afternoons from 1:30-2:45 p.m., for 16 weeks, from October to March. For boys and girls ages 10 and up, this program was designed to allow for a non-contact, stress-free, fun environment for kids (and parents) to come out and enjoy the game they love, all the while developing them as sportsmanlike players, good citizens and teammates. Scavenger hunt set

Calling all horseback riders and buggy drivers. A Scavenger Hunt and Poker Ride is taking place on Oct. 1 at Larch Hills X-Country Trails south of Salmon Arm. All breeds and sizes of horses are welcome. Ride the trails or drive them. There’ll be a choice of a three-hour or one-and-a-half hour ride, and drivers can do a 10-km buggy ride on their own logging road trail. The more ‘specimens’ you collect for the Scavenger Hunt, the more you win. Bonus if you find the Golden Horseshoe. There will be prizes for adults and juniors, riders and drivers.

If you like to play cards, join in on the Poker Ride; buy a hand or two at $5 each. Prizes for the best hand. This is a fundraiser for the BC Interior Morgan Horse Club. Horse Council BC insurance preferred, but not mandatory.

No dogs please. Lots of parking, some corrals available. Pack a lunch or snacks. Contact Rachael at 250-679-1175 or Nancy at 250-546-9922.
