Welcome Nifty 50s

Thirty-six teams of women 50 and older from throughout B.C. have gathered in Salmon Arm for the Nifty 50 Spiel. Only two teams per town are allowed, with two participating from host Salmon Arm. Eleven teams are here from Vancouver Island, with the most northerly team coming from Quesnel. The bonspiel is an annual event begun in 1964 and held in a different town each year. Curling began on Tuesday morning and wraps up Thursday afternoon.

Rockets blast to wins

The Thompson Okanagan Female Midget AAA Rockets won a hard-fought, 3-1 battle against a determined Prince George Cougars team over the weekend and came out on the winning side to continue in their quest to be the BC Hockey Female Midget AAA Champions. Salmon Arm’s Janessa Jenkins scored one of the three goals. Saturday’s game saw the Rockets down 3-1 by the end of the second period. The Rockets came out strong in the third and tied the game with 40 seconds left but a shot from the Cougars found the back of the net with 19 seconds left and the Rockets lost the game 4-3. Salmon Arm’s Shylah Gibb notched an assist. In Sunday’s game, the Rockets came out strong with the first goal of the game at the 19 minute mark of the first period. A second goal, assisted by Gibb, came at the start of the second period. The Cougars were able to get one goal past the Rockets netminder, with the final score 2-1.

Salmon Arm successes

Salmon Arm teams achieved success during the Shuswap Cup Bantam Rec Hockey Tournament held over the March 11-13 weekend.

Battling through game matchups throughout the 12-team tourney, the Salmon Arm Honda-Powerhouse team landed second place

spot to move them into the semifinals with the Salmon Arm Finch & Co. Warriors, who placed third after round-robin play.

After a season of trading wins between the two home teams, the Warriors earned victory in the semifinal to move them into the championship match versus the Kelowna Stars. At the end of three periods, the Warriors accepted second place in a close 3-1 Kelowna game.

The Warriors and Powerhouse ended their seasons with second and first placements in both A and B pools during league playoffs.

Best movie on two wheels

The Salmon Arm premier of the bike movie “Life Cycles” will be held at the Salmar Classic Theatre, on April 1 – no kidding.

It’s touted as one of the most visually stunning bike movies ever made. If you are a local rider with video of riding on local trails, put it together and submit it. The top three will be shown after the movie, and the crowd favourite will win a prize. Tickets are available at Ridetech and at the door for $10.

Eight ender

In the March 11 open curling league night, the club had another eight ender. This one from skip Don McMillan, lead Brad Case, second Ann Laitinen, and third Cheryl Lattin. 16:02:48
