Sixty-two athletes from around the province were on the court last weekend as the Nelson Squash and Social Lounge hosted its annual Spring Classic tournament.

We had the pleasure of watching two exhibition matches between professional players including our own club pro, Sarfarez Ahmed, who lost 3-1 to former B.C. No. 1 pro Viktor Berg in one match.

In the other match, Justin Todd beat fellow Vancouver native Morgan Latremouille in a 3-1 decision.

Other results included: Kevin Limbert of Fruitvale bested George James of Penticton in the men’s open final; Rich Thompson of Nelson was the victor against George Freitag of Cranbrook in the men’s A final; Kelowna’s Geoff Stoakes downed Vernon’s Jason Weglo in the men’s B final; and in the men’s C final it was an all-Nelson match with Stephen Harris defeating Poul Henricksen.

On the Ladies side, the C-D event was won by Carolyn Amantea of Trail, who beating Nelson’s Kari Jackson.

In a special ceremony on Saturday night, long-time member Henricksen was honoured with a plaque for his significant contributions to the Nelson Squash facility over many years.

He was also awarded a lifetime membership to the Nelson Squash Club.
