Strong third quarter sends Bears past Spartans

Trinity Western men's basketball team drops 87-75 decision to fourth-ranked Alberta Golden Bears

A poor third quarter cost the Trinity Western Spartans on the road against the fourth-ranked Alberta Golden Bears.

The men’s basketball team was in Edmonton on Nov. 21 and trailed just 43-37 at the half. But the Golden Bears came out in the third and outscored their Langley visitors 24-9 to cruise to the 87-75 victory in Canada West men’s basketball action at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

The Bears improved to 6-1 while the Spartans fell to 3-4.

“We competed quite well in the first half but in the third quarter, we just gave up too many second chance points and too many offensive rebounds,” said Trinity Western coach Scott Allen.

“Foul trouble also kept guys from playing more minutes and being more effective. I’m happy that we did compete in some ways but we need to learn how to be more consistent and be more disciplined.”

The Spartans played an aggressive game, but it cost them at times as they sent Alberta to the foul line 32 times.

Denny McDonald was the lone Spartan to hit double figures with a game-high 21 points.

Trinity Western finishes its Prairie road trip with a game in Saskatoon against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 22.
